The 5 Best Netflix Casino Movies
1. The Player – 2014
You don’t have to look far beyond the title of this film to find out what it could be about. Mark Wahlberg stars in this 2014 thriller that tells the story of one person’s mounting debt caused by reckless gambling.
The protagonist is a Harvard professor whose personal life seems perfect. However, he can’t help but lose everything while playing. He is addicted to the excitement and danger of the game, and he finds himself in many difficult situations.
Wahlberg’s character, Jim Bennett, is a literature professor who plays card games. He eventually becomes addicted and has problems with his friends and his girlfriend. Not only that, but he finds himself embroiled in trouble with a dangerous gang. Jim Bennett has seven days to pay off his $200,000 debt to the owner of a high-stakes underground gambling network or he will be murdered. Jim is offered $260,000 by another loan shark called Frank, who says he will kill his family if the money is not returned.
The Gambler is a remake of the 1974 film directed by Karel Reisz and starring James Caan from The Godfather.
2. Molly’s Game – 2017
The film Molly’s Game is a biographical film based on a book of the same name which chronicles the life of Molly Bloom and is based on a true story. In the film, Molly is played by Jessica Chastain. She is a professional skater who suffers from an injury preventing her from participating in the Olympic Games. With her dream gone, Molly’s life takes a completely different direction.
Originally intending to go to law school, Molly decides to go to Los Angeles, where she gets a job as a waitress serving bottles. She meets Dean, who is a real estate developer – through a failure. After becoming his office manager, she is soon involved in running Cobra Lounge, Dean’s underground poker gaming business frequented by the rich and famous.
When Molly becomes too independent for Dean’s liking, he tries to control her but ends up firing her.
By this time, Molly had enough contacts to start her own underground poker games and struck out on her own.
Eventually, she finds herself under investigation by the FBI after creating her underground poker empire for famous athletes, Hollywood stars, the Russian mob and business tycoons. After being successful in her business for ten years, she suddenly has no access to her bank accounts and has to appear in court. Molly’s Game received numerous awards and nominations for its great plot and the way it was filmed. If, unlike Molly, you are looking for a real online casino unlike Molly, there are many legit Australian casinos online that you can easily find. Although she thinks it’s because she’s illegally running poker games and not following the real casino rules, it ends up being much more dangerous and complicated.
3. Uncut Gems – 2019
Adam Sandler stars in this 2019 film directed by Josh and Benny Safdie. Sandler stars as a Jewish jeweler from New York, Howard Ratner, always on the hunt for high stakes. Ratner suffers from significant financial difficulties and tries to get out of his situation by selling a precious and rare black opal gem he acquired from some Ethiopian miners. However, when the contraband opal arrives at his jewelry store, baseball star Kevin Garnett is there and insists on saving it for the basketball game. Reluctantly, Howard agrees and accepts Kevin Garnett’s 2008 NBA championship ring as collateral. However, Howard decided to pawn the ring and bet on Garnett’s match that night. 5. CasinoJack – 2010
It may be the oldest film in our review, but that doesn’t make it any less noteworthy. This biopic stars Pepper Barry, Lovitz John and Kevin Spacey and combines crime and comedy.
Kevin Spacey plays a high-profile politician named Jack Abramoff, who is a member of the Republican Party — and influential to boot. Jack achieves much success through conspiracies and intrigues before being exposed to the drink and subsequently removed from the party. The story depicts one of the biggest scandals in Washington, DC this century.
Jack is a lobbyist who manages to influence the vote in Congress, which allows him to get money from people who benefit from the vote.
So while this isn’t your typical game movie, nor an Australian movie, it’s an exciting and funny film about corruption and fraud.
