Daniel Craig ends his 15-year, five-movie career as James Bond in the highly anticipated No Time to Die, with the actor admitting why he’s returned for one final film.

There had been a lot of speculation as to whether Craig, 53, was finished in 007 after 2015’s Specter, which he filmed for six months in an agonizing shoot that resulted in him tearing his meniscus for shooting.

The actor admitted in an extensive interview with Total Film that there was a common thread to his 2006 Bond debut, Casino Royale, that prompted him to return one last time as the iconic secret agent.

“I thought I was probably physically incapable of doing another one. For me it was very clear that I would not be coming back, ”said Craig clearly.

Producer Barbara Broccoli added Craig was “so exhausted after this movie,” adding that they knew the actor needed a break.

Almost two years passed before Broccoli and his half-brother Michael Wilson, who together run Eon Productions, asked Craig to make another Bond film, when Craig recalled a Casino Royale story thread as he wanted to finish.

“We started talking about it and I was like, ‘Maybe there’s a story we need to end here – something we started in Casino (Royale),” Craig said.

“” Something to do with Vesper and Specter, and something that was related, in a way. He began to formulate. And I thought, “Here we go,” added Craig.

The Vesper he refers to is Vesper Lynd, a Casino Royale character played by Eva Green, who Bond fell in love with before it was revealed that she had played him the entire time.

It was revealed in 2015’s Specter that Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Christoph Waltz) staged Vesper’s death while Blofeld called himself the “author” of all the pain in Bond.

Wilson admitted that Craig’s five-movie arc looked like a “little miniseries” in the middle of the entire James Bond franchise, which Wilson agrees with.

“This movie looks like a good bookend for Casino, as its emotional development reaches a place we’ve never seen Bond before. So that’s pretty exciting, ”Wilson said.

Craig added: ‘On Casino he loses the love of his life and then the shutters fall. On Quantum, the flawed film that it is, it’s all about revenge. And Skyfall talks about M. It’s all about the loss. These are big themes. And I think, “Yeah! Why don’t you have some big themes?” ‘

When asked what the theme of No Time To Die was, Craig added, “Love and family. Because what’s bigger than that?

He added that Bond’s “family” being Moneypenny and Q and Mr. And then Lashana [Lynch] come in, and she’s like a distant cousin that you’re not sure about.
