Casino Royale, which featured Daniel Craig’s James Bond in 2006, may be considered one of the franchise’s best episodes, but it’s not without flaws. Something director Martin Campbell isn’t afraid to admit.

In a new interview with Polygon, the filmmaker went back on his time overseeing the production of the atmospheric poker game sequence.

“It’s kind of Bond before he became Bond, thinking with his heart rather than his head,” Campbell explained, noting that the agent loses two rounds before winning the entire tournament.

“From a dramatic standpoint, each of the card games has a good climax […] The point was, you would never play it as one long game. I think that would have tested the patience of the audience. “

He later revealed that there was a moment during it that couldn’t help but make him laugh every time he revisited the movie.

The scene in question sees Bond beat Mads Mikkelsen’s LeChiffre with a straight flush. Just before the winner leaves the table, he slips on a chip “worth” $ 500,000 as a tip to the dealer. But outside of the game, the token is basically just a piece of plastic.
